Moving

Exciting News!

We're moving to a brand new place! After ten years in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City, we're heading to the other end of the valley (Daybreak for you locals.) Six weeks to plan, organize and pack our stuff. Do you have any moving tips? What worked for you? What didn't? Do tell!

Yikes! We've considered Daybreak several times, but downtown living is in our blood.

Purge, purge, purge. When we moved out of our house, I told myself if I can easily replace it, then get rid of it. Don't move it or store it.

You can get free, previously used, packing boxes at the U-Haul store on 21st South and I-15. You'll have to check frequently as amount varies. There's a bin just inside the west door to the building...or at least there was 3 years ago when we moved. You can then drop off your packing boxes when you're done.

Banker's boxes or boxes that reams of copy paper come in are great for packing books and small items. They are sturdy and stack easily.

Keep your bedding and essential bath items (including toilet paper!!) in the car with you. Make up your bed as soon as it's set up. Also take a change or two of clothes with you in the car. Then you won't have to try to remember what box these things are in when you are dead tired and want to go to bed.

Unpack your kitchen and bathroom at the new place first (after making your bed). It's always easier to function if the kitchen and bathroom aren't a disaster.

Enlist the help of family and friends. I have MANY moves under my belt, thus lots of experience. I'm glad to come over and work with you. Also, an unbiased person can help with the purging process.

I'm serious about helping. Call me.

How exciting for you!
Moving advice...get rid of what you don't need. There's no sense in moving unneeded things that may sit in boxes for years to come.

Well MY plan is to put tacks on the ground by the loading dock and if that doesn't work I'll throw myself in front to the truck. You can't move.

I would say (after umpteen moves) that unpacking should take way less thought than you think it should. Just get it put away and then over the next few weeks when you figure out how your space works for you, you can change it all up as you go. Makes it easier than sitting in a kitchen for five hours trying to figure out where to put things.

Seriously can't wait to see the new digs! So, so exciting!

I've been gone for a week and am reading your posts backward...

Welcome to the south end of the valley! I'm across the way in Sandy.

Write down every thing you put in a box, and label that box. (Keep the list on a pad of paper or computer - not on a label on the box). It's no fun right now, but you will be so happy later. We have a bunch of boxes still in storage 5 years later (I would like to ditch them but my husband won't). I know exactly what is in each box. It makes finding and sorting much easier.
