Son of a Gun

Ruby sat by the window and considered her reflection in the September twilight.Streaks of sunset polished her skin, and caught her hair on fire. Where would she be tonight if not for Leo?
Leo lived in that rare grace of self that could keep his identity in tact through any ordeal. He did not depend on outward props to shore himself up; heartache, circumstance and violence could not eradicate the moral, gentle habits of his upbringing. Jack had been a mirage. Leo had been a well, hardly visible from a distance but with the depth and purity to restore her. Ruby hardly ever thought of those ugly days anymore. Leo had broken off that part of her life like he would the wormy end of a piece of corn. When it was gone, it was forgotten and he just saw the golden, fresh promise she held inside.
Admit it: old What's-His-Name was just a mirage. Think of one word that describes what you missed out on by dumping him. I'll go first: TROUBLE.

Aren't you relieved you didn't end up with a dork?:
Now it's your turn~
Now it's your turn~
Write down why you're glad you're with the guy you're with. Someday in the future someone will want to know. (And someday in the present, you might need a reminder, yourself!) I've written many such love letters; click here for one of my favorites.
Hah, fun post for sure...I'd be living in a very small town, with gossip filling the air because it's well, a small town. I'd still be in Ohio with a small scope of the world. Eveyone would know my business.
ReplyDeleteand I don't know what else for sure but I'm glad I didn't although he's still gorgeous!
Actually, I did end up with a "What's His Name" the first time around. The only good thing that came from that marriage was my oldest son. Back when that son got married, I got a very good idea of what my life would have been like had I stayed with him. It was rather scary. Besides that, a few years later, this guy didn't even recognize me as the mother of his son when I was waiting to pick up my granddaughter at the place where both my son and his father worked.
ReplyDeleteAnd for the one that got away...he wasn't a dork. He is now a well established dentist in the SL valley, still good looking and not dorky at all. I actually had an encounter with him at a place where I worked. He didn't recognize me, but I knew who he was because his name was in the appointment book. I could have let the recognition pass, but took a brave step and told him who I was. Since he was the one who royally dumped me, I was surprised when he told me that he thought about me from time to time. What would my life with him had been like? I can't really say. He was my first real love and really broke my heart.
ReplyDeleteI don't know where I'd be if not for Josh. He truly is the best thing that ever happened to me.
ReplyDeleteIt is easier for me to tell you why I am glad I didn't marry the first two I was engaged to:
ReplyDelete#1? He died of cirrhosis at age 52 after drinking to excess for years and massacring (sp?) his huge potential in life.
#2? Was a momma's boy (the baby of four) and never amounted to anything. He's dead now too, although I don't know what killed him.
There is a story told about Bill and Hillary Clinton driving through the countryside one Sunday and they stopped at a gasoline station to refuel.
ReplyDeleteThe attendant recognized Hillary and gave her a big hug.She introduced him to Bill as a former boyfriend.
When they drove out of the station Bill turned to Hillary and said,"Just think,Hil,if you had married that guy you would be pumping gas at that station.
Hillary replied,"Oh, no,Bill, If I had married that guy he would be President of the United States.
