Looking Forward to Saturday

I'm Sick.

"I cannot go to school today,"
Said little Peggy Ann McKay.
"I have the measles and the mumps,
A gash, a rash and purple bumps.
My tonsils are as big as rocks,
I've counted sixteen chicken pox
And there's one more—that's seventeen,
And don't you think my face looks green?
I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,
I'm sure that my left leg is broke—
My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,
I hardly whisper when I speak.
I have a hangnail, and my heart is—what?
What's that? What's that you say?
You say today is . . . Saturday?
G'bye, I'm going out to play!"

  1. This poem is taking up a little slice of my memory since Elementary school. I can't shake it... I just recited it to my son, Henry, last weekend, when he came in to our bedroom at 6:00 AM with a tummyache that magically disappeared once he learned it was Saturday. Hope you're on the mend soon!

  5. Hope you're feeling better. I feel just like the poem almost everyday! This cold spell has made my rheumatoid arthritis go bonkers. Hope you are on the mend. I love your post about "Bless Aunt 'Ree".

  6. One of my favorite memories of teaching 1st grade is a child's telling me that he'd asked for a Shel Silverstein poetry book like the latest one I'd been reading to my class. Such joy!
